My photographic journey began as an unexpected side effect of a career in television. I was working as a researcher on documentaries for the likes of Animal Planet and National Geographic and found myself fascinated by the photos I was seeing of the subjects and places I was researching.
Not surprisingly my early photographic career was primarily as a photojournalist producing nature and travel articles for Australian magazines. As I got more work in this field and found myself travelling to do my shoots, I began photographing the hotels I visited as part of the storytelling process. I have to admit that it took me by surprise when I discovered a new passion for shooting architecture.
Though the subject matter may be very different, the best resorts compliment the natural surroundings and I believe my background in nature photography brings a fresh perspective and approach to how I photograph them. Whenever possible I offer my clients not just the standard architectural photos but also unique images of the surrounding landscapes, flora and fauna.
Not so long ago I worked with Aman Resorts photographing their five Indonesian properties and their new 52 metre phinisi, Amandira. Working with Aman was an amazing experience and an exciting creative challenge to capture the stunning architecture of their properties alongside the spectacular surrounding natural environment.
When I’m not shooting hotels or resorts I am a nature and travel photographer. I have worked a lot in recent years with Experience Travel Group producing images highlighting their tour packages around Southeast Asia. These have been very rewarding photographic journeys that took me all over Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The subject matter ranged from high-end resorts to sulphur miners in their homes on the top of an active volcano. I got to photograph wild Orang Utans, baby sea turtles and some of the most spectacular landscapes these countries have to offer.
To compliment my photography I also write travel and nature articles for magazines. My work has appeared regularly in Australian Science Illustrated and Popular Science as well as featuring in Australian Geographic, Discovery Channel Magazine and many others.
